I do so dislike starting out with a negative, but feel I must approach my progress like ripping off a bandaid. The last week has been nearly a cookie cutter copy of last week, only slightly worse.

But before getting into the details I will give you an overview of what you can expect this week.

  • Goal progress
  • Thoughts for the week
  • Choosing better topics
  • Scheduling my time

Goal Progress

My writing log this week covers the week beginning 13 April 2020 and concluding on 19 April 2020. In this time I completed 3,073 words and published three articles.

I have written 24,463 words towards my 1 million word goal and published 35 articles.

The above result means that I need to aim a little higher each week now for 26,674 words per week or 3,810 per day. While for my publishing goal, my target is still similar at 14 articles per week or just under 2 per day there is some rounding involved here.

Thoughts For The Week

Although I am making small progress each week, the efforts I am putting towards this goal are not nearly enough. Every week that the weekly and daily targets increase, I am getting further from achieving my goal.

Throughout the week I put in some time writing. I started or edited 13 drafts in the past week. They contain around 3,000 words, although I could only guess that has increased by maybe 500 words this week. There was just one substantial story that I published this week.

I tried one new thing this week, which seemed to work well on the day I published the above piece. That was to schedule my day, something that I will discuss further below.

Choosing Better Topics

Over the past week when I look back at the days I struggled through drafts there seems to be one theme. The topics I was trying to write about are not key topics for me. They are not topics I can innately speak about.

The topics I seem to pick don’t come from personal experience. One story I was working on is about brainstorming for business. It is a topic that I can pull together with research and a little knowledge. But it is a heavy research topic for me.

The one article that I published this week comes from personal experience. There were one or two dates I had to research, but the rest was me sharing my experience.

What I think this means is that I need to do a better job at choosing topics to write about. I don’t mind doing some research; I don’t even mind a lot of research. But I would prefer to be researching sources for information, I know. Instead of researching to find the core idea of what I am writing.

Scheduling My time

For a long time I have put in zero effort to assign my time to anything specific. I just do whatever seems suitable. Writing has featured in this approach to life, but not enough to achieve my goal.

As I have very few things that need scheduling I have taken a fairly simple approach. In the evening before going to bed I take a sheet of paper and write each hour for the following day.

I allocate regular activities to their time slots, meals and morning routine and such. I then add in 3–4 hours for writing, 1 hour for promoting my writing and with any left over hours I put in chores.

At this point I have only taken this approach for one or two days. The result was one day success with a published post. But the other day did not quite go to plan. But 50% success rate is a good place to start and to work on improving.

Write On

I hope that my writing logs are creating some benefit for others. They help me work out some of my ideas and to think out loud with some ideas. Unfortunately, they have not been all that positive so far. But that is something I am working on changing, next week is another week.
